Look up: Exploring Medium Format at 4,000m

In this talk, photographer and visual artist Angel Fux takes you behind the scenes of a recent project created with the FUJIFILM GFX system, from the first idea and extensive planning to the logistics of reaching and working at high altitude, and ultimately the creation of the final artwork.
Drawing from her work in some of the most demanding mountain environments, Angel will explore what changes when moving from full-frame to medium format for landscape and night photography: the level of detail, dynamic range and colour captured by the larger sensor, but also the practical realities of carrying and operating such a system in extreme cold and remote environments.
Through behind-the-scenes material and the resulting images, she will share her first experience integrating the GFX system into an established astrophotography workflow, what surprised her, where medium format brings something different to the creative process, and the considerations that come with choosing equipment for highly planned images where landscape, night sky and storytelling come together.
More broadly, the talk will offer a look into the amount of preparation, patience and fieldwork that can sit behind a single finished image, and how the choice of camera can become part of that creative process rather than simply a technical decision.

Angel Fux is a Swiss photographer and visual artist working primarily in high-altitude mountain environments under the night sky, blending documentary precision with an artistic sensibility.
Her practice moves between the documentary and the poetic. Some images emerge from months of technical planning, celestial calculations, and expeditions in extreme conditions, where fidelity to what was truly there matters deeply. Others more freely layer time, light, and memory to translate moments that reality alone cannot contain in a single frame.
From the Swiss Alps to the Peruvian Andes, Angel pursues rare celestial events and the darkness found far from artificial light. A single image may require complex logistics, hundreds of exposures, and days of post-processing—the commitment itself becoming part of the work.
She began photography at ten, learning in the field, and today works across astrophotography, landscape, composite imagery, writing, and filmmaking.
Her work has been recognized by NASA APOD, BBC Science Focus, The Guardian, RTS, and Astronomy Magazine, and awarded internationally.
At its core, her work follows one intention: to go where beauty still exists, document it with care, and bring it back for those who cannot go – to inspire both its experience and its protection.
